Twitter Is Now a Word

By Holden Page on July 6, 2009

Well it looks like Twitter is here to stay. Mashable has reported that Twitter will now be included in the next edition of Collins English Dictionary.

The term Twitter will be defined as such for the noun:  ”a website where people can post short messages about their current activities”

The term Twitter will be defined as such for the verb: “to write short messages on the Twitter website.”

What gets me and what Mashable pointed out is the non-inclusion of the word tweet. Usually we  use the word “tweet” as a verb but hey, getting included in a dictionary is pretty sweet any way you put it. As far as anyone knows, there seems to be no inclusion planned for the Merrian-Webster dictionary. This  news also comes hot off the heels of Twitter being included in the AP Style book.

Long live the Twitter.

  1. That is so cool! Twitter really took the social sphere by storm.

By the way, nice website and got here thru a good friend, Misty.

  2. I beg to differ! Twitter has been a word for a long time. Here is the entry from a 1913 Webster’s dictionary I happen to own:

    Twitter n. One who twits.
Twitter v To make a succession of small, tremulous, intermitted noises. … n. Act, sounds, or sensation of twittering.
